In an effort to further expand its European logistics network, Danish ferry and logistics company DFDS has acquired 100% of the share capital of the Finnish logistics company Freeco Logistics. Fire Hits Tanker off Singapore, 18 Crew Evacuated

The Panama-flagged oil and chemical tanker Hoyu was hit by a fire in Singapore’s territorial waters, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The incident occurred in the afternoon hours of November 7 while the 8,925 dwt unit was some 9.7 nautical miles from Pedra Branca, eastern Singapore Strait.

Norway-based shipowner 2020 Bulkers has accepted delivery of the second of the eight 208,000 dwt Newcastlemax newbuilds from New Times Shipbuilding in China. The bulker in question is Bulk Santiago and has a capacity of 224,100 cubic meters. Flying the flag of Liberia, the ship was handed over to 2020 Bulkers on September 19, 2019. On September 21, the 300-meter-long bulk carrier will commence a 12-15-month time charter with Koch Supply & Trading at a fixed rate of USD 19,525 per day.

Hyundai Heavy Gets AIP from DNV GL for New LPG Carrier Design

Classification society DNV GL has awarded South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) with an approval in principle (AIP) for the design of a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The AIP certificate for the 91,000 cubic meter dual-fuel vessel design was presented during the Gastech trade fair being held in Houston. “We are particularly proud to receive this certificate as the 91,000 cbm carrier design lays the groundwork for constructing the largest-sized vessels using LPG cargo as a fuel today,” Hyung Kwan Kim, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at HHI, commented.

The time charter was agreed earlier this year when one-year when rates for a standard Capesize were approximately USD 13,000 per day.

WMU GRADUATION CEREMONY 2018

On Sunday, 4 November, the maritime leaders of tomorrow from over 70 countries graduated from the World Maritime University (WMU). The graduates have received the education required to contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in their home countries as well as within the broader maritime and ocean community. NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) supported the staff at Cargill’s ocean transportation office in Teaneck, New Jersey, one of NAMEPA’s corporate members, when they got their hands dirty to celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICC Day). ICC Day is an international movement to mobilize communities to clean up marine environments run by the Ocean Conservancy and several state partners. ICC Day has been helping to preserve marine environments for the past 30 years, and results in the International Coastal Cleanup annual cleanup report, which is one of the largest citizen science reports on marine debris and has become the basis for the United Nations’ report on marine debris.

U.S. SALVORS SUCCESSFULLY PASS EVERY COAST GUARD VERIFICATION - TO DATE

On April 18 th , Rear Admiral Anthony “Jack” Vogt, Assistant Commandant for Response Policy, released an update on the status of the most recent U.S. Salvage and Marine Firefighting (SMFF) industry verification initiative. According to the report, the Coast Guard has conducted 58 scenario-based SMFF verifications within the last year across 19 different Captain of the Port Zones, with 16 different vessel owners and operators. To date, all results have been found to be satisfactory and reflect compliance with the Coast Guard’s Salvage and Marine Firefighting regulations.

Bottom line: Is the salvage industry meeting U.S. regulatory requirements? Yes. Should the U.S continuously improve its salvage and marine firefighting and capabilities? Yes. Should the U.S. government do so by granting what amounts to a monopoly for RORC to provide small boats to carry qualified professional salvors to a marine casualty incident? No.
