ABB, Wallenius Marine Partner to Monitor CII Performance of Terntanks Fleet
Swedish-Swiss technology leader ABB and ship management company Wallenius Marine have partnered with Danish operator Terntank in a new trial aimed at monitoring the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) performance of six Terntank-owned tankers. The collaboration focuses on reducing emissions and improving the environmental footprint of the maritime industry through ABB’s OVERSEA fleet support system. The trial will assess key systems such as engines, hulls, and propellers, and provide shore-based expertise to optimize vessel performance. Leveraging ABB’s Genix AI and analytics platform, the project aims to unlock valuable data to enhance operational efficiency.

Christiania Shipping Expands Fleet with Acquisition of 13 Stainless Steel Chemical Carriers
Christiania Shipping has announced its acquisition of NAVQUIM Holding, a European operator of stainless steel chemical carriers, in a deal set to close in October 2024. The acquisition, which includes 13 stainless steel chemical carriers, aims to strengthen Christiania Shippings position as the preferred infrastructure partner for small-scale chemical transport in Europe. With this addition, Christiania’s fleet will grow significantly, complementing its existing 16 chemical and 13 LPG carriers. Axel C. Eitzen, Chairman of Christiania Shipping, emphasized that the deal will enhance their service offering and expand their market reach.

K Line Receives Its First LNG-Powered Car Carrier, Nereus Highway
Japanese shipping giant Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has taken delivery of its first LNG-powered car carrier, the Nereus Highway, from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. With a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, this vessel represents K Lines first LNG-fueled ship order from a Chinese shipyard. The Nereus Highway is designed to significantly reduce emissions, cutting CO2 by 25-30%, sulfur oxides by almost 100%, and nitrogen oxides by 75%, in compliance with IMO Tier III standards. Powered by WinGD’s dual-fuel engine, the ship aligns with K Lines goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Yinson GreenTech Begins Trials for Singapores First Fully Electric Cargo Vessel
Yinson GreenTech (YGT) has commenced commercial trials for Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel, the Hydromover, in a move to support harbor craft operators in reducing their carbon footprint. On August 26, 2024, YGT’s marine electrification division, marinEV, officially handed over the vessel to OPL Services at Lita Ocean shipyard. The Hydromover will undergo trial charters over the coming months, allowing operators to experience the advantages of zero-emission electric technology. This initiative is in line with Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authoritys goal of fully electrifying harbor crafts by 2030. Six potential partners, including Lita Ocean and DM Sea Logistics, have shown interest in electrifying their fleets, which consist of over 200 vessels.

Brunvoll For Geres Partnership with Torghatten Nord on New Hybrid Ferry for Lofoten Route
Norwegian company Brunvoll has partnered with Torghatten Nord to advance sustainable maritime travel with a new hybrid ferry for the Lofoten route. Scheduled to enter service in 2026, the 73.3-meter ferry will operate between Svolvær and Skutvik, enhancing capacity and environmental sustainability. Featuring a 3600 kWh battery system, the ferry will run on electric power for short trips between Svolvær and Skrova and switch to hybrid mode during peak summer periods in Skutvik, aiming to significantly cut NOx and CO2 emissions. Brunvoll’s high-tech systems, including azimuth thrusters, Auto-Crossing system, and remote Condition Monitoring System, will ensure efficient and sustainable voyages. This project follows Torghatten Nord’s recent progress in sustainable shipbuilding and Brunvoll’s supply of propulsion systems for upcoming hydrogen-ready vessels.
