Maritime Career Guidance Event Mighty Mariner Makes Waves at Srinivas Institute of Technology

Mariner, a comprehensive career guidance event. The full-day program, which took place on December 9th, 2024, at the prestigious Srinivas Institute of Technology in Mangalore, brought together industry luminaries and aspiring maritime professionals under one roof.

The event, conducted under the esteemed leadership of Sir Sohan Roy, the visionary Founder and Chairman of IMC/AIMRI/Aries Energy UAE, and Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, the distinguished Principal of Shrinivas Institute of Technology, served as a vital bridge between academic knowledge and industry requirements. From 10:20 AM to 4:30 PM (IST), participants were immersed in a wealth of maritime expertise and professional insights.

A constellation of industry experts graced the event with their presence and knowledge. Sir Sohan Roy captivated the audience with his presentation on the "Unwritten Rules of Maritime Industry," sharing invaluable insights gained from years of experience. Mr. Nikeel Idnani, Secretary of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (UAE & UK), offered practical wisdom on the crucial transition from shipboard to shore-based careers. The educational discourse was further enriched by Capt. A. Nagaraj Subbarao, PhD, who delivered an engaging session on crisis management and decision-making strategies in the maritime industry.

The programs scope expanded with Cdr. Babu Gurucharan SH (Retd)s compelling presentation on environmental protection in the maritime sector, reflecting the industrys growing focus on sustainability. Mr. Mark Lea, Safety and Technical Officer at IRATA, UK, rounded out the expert presentations with an illuminating discussion on career opportunities in maritime rope access, opening new horizons for attendees.

A distinctive feature of the event was the incorporation of various Hartoise Level 1 programs, covering crucial aspects of professional development. These sessions addressed fundamental topics such as Time Management, Career Design Management, Religion of a Hartoise, Efficiency Checklist, Industrial Behavior, and the 25 Qualities of an Ideal Professional, providing a holistic approach to career development.

Understanding the importance of accessibility in todays digital age, the organizers facilitated live streaming of the event. Furthermore, they have made all seminar presentations available online, enabling students worldwide to access this valuable content and obtain certification at their convenience.

This comprehensive event not only succeeded in bridging the gap between academic training and industry requirements but also provided participants with a unique opportunity to gain insights from industry veterans and enhance their understanding of the maritime sectors diverse career opportunities.

BUREAU VERITAS Expands LNG Bunkering Fleet and Explores Clean Fuel Innovations

Bureau Veritas - Marine & Offshore (BV) has classified three new LNG bunkering vessels, further strengthening its role in maritime decarbonization. These include an 18,600 cbm vessel for Ibaizabal built at Hudong Zhonghua and two 18,000 cbm vessels for Hercules Shipping, the shipping division of Peninsula, constructed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. Scheduled for delivery from 2026, these ships join 18 BV-classed LNG bunkering vessels already in service, with four more expected by 2026. BV currently oversees approximately 35% of global bunkering vessels and half of the current order book. Carlos Guerrero, Global Market Leader for Gas Carriers at BV, highlighted the vessels importance in meeting growing LNG demand and ensuring compliance with stringent emissions targets. He reaffirmed BVs commitment to innovative solutions supporting decarbonization. BV is also advancing alternative fuels like methanol and ammonia, granting approval in principle for a liquid ammonia bunkering vessel by Chinas Dalian Shipbuilding in 2024 and collaborating on ammonia-fueled large carrier designs. Guerrero emphasized leveraging LNG expertise to promote these fuels adoption.As the International Maritime Organization revises ammonia regulations, BV is well-positioned to guide the maritime industry toward a sustainable future.

Chinese Shipyard Delivers Eco-Friendly Hybrid RoRo Ship to Grimaldi Group

The Grimaldi Group has received its 13th hybrid roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel, Eco Salerno, as part of its Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) fleet. Delivered on December 3, 2024, by Chinas Jingling shipyard in Nanjing, the Italian-flagged ship exemplifies sustainable maritime innovation. With a length of 238 meters, a beam of 34 meters, and a gross tonnage of 67,311 tons, the Eco Salerno operates at a service speed of 20.8 knots. It features electronically controlled engines and an exhaust gas cleaning system, ensuring reduced sulfur and particulate emissions. Notably, the ship achieves "Zero emission in port" operations by utilizing electricity from its 5 MWh lithium battery system, recharged during navigation via shaft generators and solar panels.This delivery follows Grimaldis recent acquisition of the Heraklion Port Authority and reflects the companys commitment to enhancing green logistics and sustainable port operations globally.

Switzerlands Viking Welcomes Eco-Friendly Cruise Ship Viking Vela to Its Fleet

Swiss cruise line Viking has expanded its fleet with the addition of Viking Vela, an eco-friendly cruise ship built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. Delivered during a ceremony at Fincantieris Ancona shipyard, the 54,300-ton vessel features 499 staterooms accommodating around 998 guests. Designed with sustainability in mind, Viking Vela boasts hydrogen-ready propulsion, enabling future retrofitting for zero-emission operations in sensitive areas like the Norwegian fjords. This marks the 13th ocean ship Fincantieri has delivered to Viking, furthering their decade-long collaboration encompassing 26 vessels. Viking Vela will debut with itineraries across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, aligning with Vikings commitment to eco-friendly cruising and advanced maritime technology.
