Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) has successfully delivered the eco-friendly 211,981 dwt bulk carrier Mount Anjin to Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS). The vessel, handed over on February 6, 2025, at JMU’s Tsu Shipyard in Japan, marks EPSs first Newcastlemax unit built by JMU. Designed under the new N211BC model, Mount Anjin integrates advanced energy-saving technologies, including JMUs Super Stream Duct, Surf-Bulb, and ALV-Fin, which enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.Additionally, the Liberia-flagged bulker is equipped with a sulfur oxide (SOx) scrubber and meets Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) and Phase III Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standards. Featuring a LEADGE Bow design and low wind-pressure accommodation, the vessel is optimized for real-sea conditions.JMUs ongoing commitment to sustainable shipbuilding was further highlighted by its selection for Japans “Promotion of Zero-Emission Ship Construction” initiative, reinforcing its role in green ship production.

NYK Line conducts Japans first biofuel trial on coal carrier Noshiro Maru

Japanese shipping giant NYK Line has achieved a national first by conducting a biofuel trial on its coal carrier, Noshiro Maru, for Tohoku Electric Power. The test, which began on February 9, marks the first time a coal carrier in Japan has been used to trial biofuels for a domestic power utility company.Facilitated by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy, the biofuel used is derived from organic resources such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil, producing nearly zero CO2 emissions when burned. NYK emphasized the role of biofuels in reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the transition to zero-emission fuels and reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable shipping solutions. To accelerate biofuel adoption, NYK launched a test engine facility in October 2024, aiming for practical implementation within three months. However, while biofuels are seen as a key decarbonization solution, future supply constraints could pose a challenge, as noted by classification society DNV.
