Seafarer Completes NAMEPA’s ESG Assessment Program Maritime Sustainability Passport Awarded

July 14, 2023--   Second Engineer Naidu Rama Lingeswara Rao is the fourth individual to certify under NAMEPA’s (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) ESG Maritime Sustainability Passport (MSP) Program, announced Carleen Lyden Walker, NAMEPA’s Co-Founder and CEO. 


“We congratulate Engineer Rao for attaining NAMEPA’s Maritime Sustainability Passport and Seal,” stated Ms. Walker. “Seafarers are integral to the sustainability and functionality of the maritime industry. Without them world trade comes to a halt. Mr. Rao exemplifies that seafaring professional who has taken the initiative to commit to incorporating ESG strategies into his work.”


NAMEPA received the following note from Engineer Rao: “Trust me, Just the opportunity to participate in the MSP 2023 program is an incredible honor for me. Getting the Seal is the icing on the cake. I thank each and every one of you for this esteemed recognition.”


When queried regarding his ESG journey, Engineer Rao shared the following:
“For me, the MSP Program has been a catalyst for fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective action. This platform has the potential to bring diverse stakeholders of shipping industry to come together, exchange ideas, and collectively address the pressing challenges we face in preserving our oceans and ensuring a sustainable future.”


Engineer Rao was awarded the MSP by completing all phases of the program, including supplying supporting documentation for his claims. ESGplus LLC evaluated his submission to determine whether he met the ESG program’s criteria, which, upon approval, made him eligible to receive the MSP Certificate and Seal. 


The NAMEPA Maritime Sustainability Passport (MSP) Program remains the only assessment program designed specifically for the maritime industry featuring all three elements of sustainability- the E, the S, and the G. Since its launch in 2020, many companies have matriculated through the program and earned their Maritime Sustainability Passport (MSP) & MSP Seal. The goal of the NAMEPA MSP Program is to help track and measure ESG performance on an annual basis and to improve industry practices to create a sustainable global society.

Now Accepting Nominations for the 2023 Marine Environment Protection Awards Presentation of Awards at NAMEPA’s Annual Event in November

Weston, CT July 26th - Carleen Lyden Walker, the Co-Founder and CEO of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), proudly announces the opening of nominations for the 2023 Marine Environment Protection (MEP) Awards. This annual recognition honors outstanding contributions made by companies, educators, associations, government agencies, academic institutions, and individuals who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to NAMEPA's mission to Save Our Seas.

Since 2008, NAMEPA has been at the forefront of engaging and honoring maritime professionals and the public to champion environmentally sound practices through community outreach and engagement. The MEP Awards stand as a testament to the tireless efforts of those who relentlessly strive to safeguard and sustain our marine environment.

“The core tenet of the "MEPA Movement" is to acknowledge those exceptional entities that are actively and wholeheartedly contributing to the protection and sustainability of our marine ecosystem “stated Ms. Walker. “By recognizing these exemplary endeavors, the MEP Awards not only bring attention to the impactful work of these professionals but also serve as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to amplify their efforts in this crucial cause.”

The 2023 MEP Awards will span across nine categories:

  • Maritime Industry (ship owners, operators, charterers, shipyards, etc.)
  • Government: Federal, State, or Local Environmental Organizations
  • Non-Profit Environmental Entity
  • Individual
  • Maritime Academies, Harbor Schools, Universities
  • Environmental Innovation Organizations
  • Seafarers Ministry (organizations and individuals may apply)
  • Ports
  • Sustainability

 

Nominations for the 2023 MEP Awards can be submitted from July 26th until September 1st and will then undergo evaluation by a panel of distinguished marine experts. The winners will be notified by September 29th and awarded during our Marine Environment Protection Awards Dinner, held at SUNY Maritime College on November 2nd at NAMEPA’s Annual Conference. This event promises to unite and acknowledge the champions of maritime stewardship while fostering a sense of collective responsibility among stakeholders.

Submissions will be judged along the following general objectives: alignment with NAMEPA goal to Save Our Seas; educational benefits; environmental benefits; innovation; measurable success (objectives/targets) in improving protection of the marine environment.

All submissions should highlight the applicant’s commitment to preserving the marine environment through environmental protection initiatives; new technologies/initiatives that mitigate damage to the marine environment; efforts (events, curriculum, projects, etc.) in educating seafarers, students, port communities and children about the need for and strategies related to protecting the seas as an important global resource; any awards or recognition for marine environmental protection efforts; efforts to increase public awareness on the importance of protecting the marine environment and marine ecosystems.
